1950s Corvettes
America fell in love with the very first Corvette when it debuted at the New York car show in 1953. That year the car went into production and became a very popular, affordable sports car – the first of its kind from GM. The first Corvette was sleek and beautiful, with an innovative fiberglass body. However, there were complaints that about the drivability and the fact that it did not handle the way an athletic sports car should. This changed in 1955 when Corvette started using a small-block V8. The 1956 model cemented Corvette’s place as an American icon. This model used the old chassis, but came with two bucket seats, beautifully sculpted flanks and a removable hardtop. The 1956 and ’57 models are considered by some as the most beautiful Corvettes ever.
1980s Corvettes
In 1984, a new Corvette was released that was dramatically different from anything that had come before it. This new car was outfitted with aluminium suspension components, rode on a 96 inch wheel base and used fully digital instruments that gave it a space-age feel. All the mechanical features were upgraded as well on the C4 Corvette. During the late ‘80s, big changes came year after year in the form of bigger engines, convertible options, anti-lock brakes, hydraulic roller lifters, bigger wheels and flashier colors.
2010+ Corvettes
Today, Corvettes are sleeker, faster and flashier than ever. After being in production for decades, they still manage to hold great appeal with the American public. Everything – from the materials used to the engines fitted to the cockpit styles – creates a more ergonomic, smoother and quicker vehicle than ever before.
